NBA 30 Teams

The NBA has grown from 11 teams at its inception to 30 teams today. It currently uses the regional divisions of the 2004-05 season, divided into two leagues, the East and the West. Each league has three divisions, and each division has five teams.

Eastern Conference (15 teams)

Western Conference (15 teams)

NBA teams that have changed their names:

The Detroit Pistons (formerly the Fort Wayne Pistons), the Los Angeles Lakers (formerly the Minneapolis Lakers), and the Sacramento Kings (formerly the Rochester Royals) joined the BAA (NBA) from the National Basketball League in 1948.
The Philadelphia 76ers (formerly the Syracuse Nationals) and the Atlanta Hawks (formerly the Tri-Cities Blackhawks) were merged into the NBL when the BAA and NBL merged in 1949.
The Oklahoma City Thunder was originally the Seattle SuperSonics. After their attempt to build a new stadium in Seattle was rejected, they simply moved the team to Oklahoma City and changed their name to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets (formerly the New York/New Jersey Nets), and Denver Nuggets were merged into the ABA when the NBA merged with the ABA in 1976.
Due to the severe damage to the New Orleans Arena, the home stadium of the team, by Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Hornets (now the New Orleans Pelicans) scheduled their home games in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, and temporarily changed their name to "New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets".
The Charlotte Hornets were founded in 1988, moved to New Orleans in 2002 and renamed the New Orleans Hornets, and changed their name to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013.
The Charlotte Bobcats were founded in 2004, and after Michael Jordan bought them, they reached an agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2014, and the Bobcats changed their name to the Charlotte Hornets, and took over the history of the Charlotte Hornets from 1988 to 2002, which was originally owned by the Pelicans.

Defunct NBA teams:

The NBA has a total of 19 disbanded teams so far, 9 of which have only participated in one NBA season. The Anderson Packers, Denver Nuggets, Indianapolis Jets, Sheboygan Redskins, and Waterloo Hawks played in the National Basketball League before joining the NBA; the Baltimore Bullets played in the American Basketball League before joining the NBA. The Anderson Packers and Sheboygan Redskins withdrew from the NBA to join the National Professional Basketball League. These are the only two teams in the United States that disbanded after joining a league other than the NBA. The Baltimore Bullets withdrew from the NBA in the 1954-55 NBA season, becoming the last disbanded team to withdraw from the NBA and the only disbanded team to win an NBA championship. The Chicago Stags, Indianapolis Olympians, Cleveland Rebels, Anderson Packers, and Sheboygan Redskins made the playoffs every year they participated in the NBA.
